Anmärkning: Innehållsbeskrivning, sammanfattning
  • The publication focuses on the collections of Georg Schwarz (1800-1867) and Martin Pitzer (1803-1877) in the Weltmuseum Wien. 0During their stays in the Great Lakes area of North America, especially in Wisconsin and Michigan, in the first half of the 19th century, these collectors put together ethnographic, Native American cabinets. The material culture of the peoples around Lake Michigan is therefore the focus here: especially that of the Odawa (Ottawa) and Ojibwe (Chippewa) as well as that of the Menominee.0Objects made of birch bark and leather, textiles and wood, bast fibers and rushes are presented. Also items such as maple sugar containers, moccasins, robes, tobacco pipes, weapons and wickerwork. Much of it was decorated with colored porcupine bristles (quill) and pearls, with hair, silk and metal. They were in the wording of the time: ?curiosities? and the ?strangest objects?.0.
